Abeokuta: Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and secured the party’s ticket for the Ogun Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obasanjo was formally received by party leaders and supporters at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta on Wednesday, where she pledged loyalty to the party and its ideals.
The PDP also presented her with its Ogun Central senatorial ticket during the ceremony.
Speaking after receiving the party flag, Obasanjo pledged allegiance to the PDP’s constitution, manifesto and code of conduct, promising to uphold the party’s values and serve with integrity, humility and dedication.
“I shall prioritise the welfare of the people above personal and sectional interests,” she said.
Obasanjo, a former Senator, represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011 on the platform of the PDP.
After spending several years abroad, she returned to Nigeria and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in January. However, the former APC governorship aspirant later left the party, citing unfair treatment and lack of respect.
Earlier, Ogun PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, formally presented the party flag to Obasanjo, describing her as a valuable addition to the party and expressing confidence in her ability to contribute to its success in the 2027 elections.
“The flag symbolises the authority of the party and our confidence in her candidature,” Tella said.
Also speaking, the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, commended Obasanjo’s resilience, commitment and service to the state.
He described her as a true daughter of Ogun and assured party supporters that a PDP-led administration in the state would ensure the effective implementation of local government autonomy.
Adebutu expressed optimism that the party would emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 elections.
