FIFA World Cup 2026: Player Suspensions Shake up Teams ahead of Decisive Matches

South Africa, Qatar grapple with key absences

Disciplinary actions sideline crucial players in pivotal group stage encounters

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies towards the crucial Round of 32, the spotlight shifts to the absence of key players from several nations, sidelined due to yellow and red card suspensions.

Amidst the fervor of this expanded tournament, which commenced with 48 teams and is set to culminate in 32 contenders after the upcoming matchday, a series of significant rule modifications have come to the fore.

From mandatory three-minute hydration breaks in each half to enhanced VAR capabilities allowing officials to review corner decisions, the tournament has witnessed a wave of changes. However, it is the disciplinary regulations that are currently shaping the narrative as the group stage approaches its climax.

In accordance with FIFA’s revised directives, players accumulating two yellow cards during the group stage face suspension for the subsequent match, with a clean slate granted at the conclusion of this phase to avert prolonged penalties.

The knockout rounds adhere to a similar protocol: two yellow cards result in a suspension, yet all accumulated cards are reset post the quarter-finals to ensure no player misses the final due to card accumulation.

The sole pathway to missing the final match lies in receiving a red card during the semi-final stage. Red card infractions, on the other hand, entail a standard one-game ban unless FIFA’s disciplinary committee deems otherwise.

The repercussions of these disciplinary measures have already reverberated across the tournament, with eight players slated to sit out crucial fixtures.

South Africa’s midfield linchpin, Teboho Mokoena, leads the list following bookings against Mexico and Czechia. Cape Verde will navigate their must-win encounter against Saudi Arabia without the services of left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemovic faces suspension post a red card, while Qatar grapples with a dual setback as Homam Elamin and Assim Madibo find themselves sidelined.

South Africa’s Themba Zwane continues to serve a three-match suspension, casting a shadow over his team’s upcoming engagements.

Adding to the list of absentees, Belgium’s Nathan Ngoy will be absent from their do-or-die clash against New Zealand after being sent off against Iran.

Additionally, Miguel Almiron finds himself on the sidelines due to a red card suspension, marking a unique instance as the first recipient of the newly introduced rule mandating players to cover their mouths in confrontational situations.
