Washington, D.C.: President Donald Trump kicked off the United States’ semiquincentennial celebrations with a campaign‑style rally on the National Mall, blending patriotic pageantry with political fervour.
The event marked the opening of America 250, a nationwide commemoration of the country’s 250th anniversary of independence, set for July 2026.
Thousands of supporters gathered beneath the shadow of the Capitol and Washington Monument, waving flags and chanting slogans as Trump delivered a speech.
He hailed America’s founding ideals while casting himself as the guardian of those principles, promising to “restore greatness” and defend the nation against what he described as threats from within and abroad.
The rally featured music, banners, and a tone reminiscent of his campaign trail appearances, underscoring how the milestone celebration has become entwined with Trump’s political messaging.
Critics argue the president is politicising a historic commemoration, while supporters say his presence energises the anniversary and reaffirms national pride. Organisers of America 250 have planned events across all 50 states, ranging from parades and exhibitions to educational programs, aiming to unite citizens around the country’s history and future.
Trump’s kickoff rally, however, set the tone: America’s 250th birthday will be celebrated not only with fireworks and festivities, but also with the unmistakable imprint of politics.
