The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Monday’s explosion in Mushin was not the result of a bomb attack, but rather a mechanical failure.
Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani addressed journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Thursday, explaining that a thorough investigation had ruled out the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The blast, which occurred at No. 19 Wey Street, initially raised fears of a possible IED. In response, police activated emergency protocols and deployed specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and CBRN unit.
These experts carried out forensic examinations of the damaged vehicle, fragments, and blast patterns, alongside witness interviews.
“Our technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, or residues associated with attacks,” Tijani said.
He added that the affected vehicle showed none of the structural damage typical of explosive incidents.
Investigators concluded that the incident was triggered by the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component outside the vehicle.
The sudden release of energy shattered glass panels and caused minor injuries to one occupant.
The case has now been officially reclassified as a mechanical explosion. Tijani reassured residents that there is no link to terrorism, sabotage, or criminal activity, urging the public to
remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities.
He commended residents for promptly alerting emergency responders, noting that their swift action helped contain the situation and allowed for a professional investigation.
