Nine Dead in Lagos Building Collapse, Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Safety Concerns

Lagos: Authorities have said nine more people have been confirmed dead and dozens injured in a multi-storey building that collapsed in Lagos on Thursday.

TheDiggerNews reported in its previous publication on Thursday that two individuals did not survive the incident when it initially occurred, while by nightfall, rescue officers had pulled sixteen people alive from the rubble.

The collapse sent shockwaves through the bustling neighbourhood, where families and office workers were going about their day.

Survivors described scenes of panic as the building gave way without warning, leaving cries for help echoing from beneath the debris.

Rescue teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), supported by other agencies, worked tirelessly through the night.

Heavy machinery was brought in to clear the wreckage, while emergency responders pulled survivors out one by one.

By Friday morning, officials confirmed that 27 people had been rescued, though many sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to life-threatening trauma.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered immediate structural checks on nearby buildings and urged strict compliance with safety regulations.

His statement reflected the growing frustration of Lagos residents, who have seen too many of these tragedies unfold in recent years.

The incident has reignited public concern over the frequency of building collapses in Lagos, often blamed on poor construction standards, corruption in regulatory processes, and weak enforcement. Each collapse leaves behind grieving families and communities demanding accountability.

As investigations continue, the city mourns yet another avoidable disaster. For those who lost loved ones, the tragedy is not just about statistics — it is about lives cut short, families shattered, and a city once again reminded of the urgent need for safer buildings.
