Ibadan, Nigeria: The countdown to one of Ibadan’s most cherished sporting traditions has begun, as registration for the 57th edition of the Olubadan Cup kicks off on Monday.
IFC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Alli, announced this in a statement in Ibadan on Saturday.
Alli said the edition, tagged “Royal Rumble”, would herald the ascension of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
According to him, the registration will run on a first-come, first-served basis till September 15, with only 16 teams eligible to participate in the tournament.
“This year’s championship is specially designed to herald the ascension of Oba Rashidi Ladoja to the throne of his ancestors as the Olubadan of Ibadan and would be by knockout from start to finish.
“The Olubadan is expected to grace the finals of the competition, further underscoring the significance of the event.
“It is noteworthy that the Olubadan-designate had previously demonstrated his support for sports, having watched a full game at the Olubadan Stadium on November 28, 2004, during his tenure as the Governor of Oyo State,” he said.
