Ilorin: The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kwara Area Command, says it has intercepted contraband items valued at N1.2 billion in the last month.
The acting Area Controller of the Service, Mr Najeem Ogundeyi, disclosed this while addressing newsmen at the command headquarters in Ilorin.
Ogundeyi said the achievement underscored the command’s commitment to its zero-tolerance policy against smuggling activities.
He said the command was working in line with the Customs Act 2023 to drastically reduce the activities of smugglers.
He disclosed that the contraband items seized include 389 bales of second-hand clothes, 108 sacks of used bags, 6,500 litres of petrol, 450 bags of 50 kg foreign parboiled rice, three vehicles, and 160 used tyres.
He emphasised that the command would not allow smugglers and economic saboteurs to operate freely in the area.
The customs boss reiterated that anyone caught engaging in smuggling would be punished in accordance with the law.
He commended the officers and men of the command for their dedication, resilience and selfless service to the nation.
Ogundeyi urged the general public to continue providing credible, timely information to the command for prompt action.
He assured that the area command would continue to sustain the tempo of enforcement within the confines of the law and respect for human rights.
