Dutse: The Police Command in Jigawa says it has detained 14 suspects for allegedly dealing in fake currencies.
The command’s Spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the development on Friday in a statement in Dutse.
He said the suspects were arrested on Thursday at about 1 am in the state’s Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
Shiisu said joint security operatives nabbed the suspects in a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
He said the team successfully raided a criminal hideout in Digawa village where the suspected fraudsters are perpetrating their fraudulent activities.
“The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, followed credible intelligence reports about the activities of a syndicate involved in fraudulent practices and other criminal acts within the region.
“During the raid, security personnel arrested 14 male suspects and recovered a cache of incriminating items,” Shiisu said.
He listed the items recovered from the suspects as nine fabricated pistols, seven Dane guns, four motorcycles, 12 pieces of fake USD, 188 pieces of Central African Currency suspected to be fake, charmed, and a bow and arrow.
The spokesman added that the arrested suspects are currently in custody and undergoing a thorough investigation, after which they will be charged in court.
“This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding communities and rooting out criminal elements.
“The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly.”
Shiisu recalled that a group of suspected fraudsters from Digiwa village invaded and attacked Dumus village on Wednesday for not supporting their fraudulent activities.
According to him, as a result of the alleged attack, one villager, identified as Isma’il Ibrahim, 60, lost his life, while eight others sustained injuries.
