Kaduna (Nigeria): The Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Portal Welby, has commended Kaduna State for the significant progress achieved in restoring peace, unity, and stability.
Building on this, Welby described the current atmosphere in the state as a striking contrast to the ethno-religious tensions that previously defined Kaduna.
He made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, where he was received by Governor Uba Sani. Notably, the visit coincided with his engagement as Guest Speaker at the Convocation Lecture of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Reflecting on his first visit to Kaduna in 2002, Welby recalled a period marked by deep divisions and recurrent crises. He noted that this contrast with the current climate of relative calm and cohesion was a key reason for his visit to the Government House.
He said that Kaduna’s visible peace and unity demonstrate deliberate efforts at reconciliation and inclusive leadership. He further noted that the state’s progress encourages leaders and communities to stay committed to peacebuilding, dialogue, and mutual understanding, especially in plural societies.
Governor Sani expressed appreciation for the Archbishop’s visit and kind remarks, describing them as both an honour and an affirmation of Kaduna’s ongoing peace initiatives.
The governor outlined what he called the Kaduna Peace Model. This approach stresses dialogue, inclusion, equity, and fairness. It has guided Kaduna’s governance for 2.5 years. He noted the absence of ethno-religious conflicts, despite Kaduna’s history of tensions. He credited intentional policies and a commitment to inclusive governance that rejects identity-based divisions.
Sani emphasised that his administration prioritises dialogue, inclusion, and development for all communities. He aims to replace fear with trust and foster a shared sense of purpose.
He reaffirmed that the government remains committed to consolidating the gains of peace, strengthening unity across differences, and building a future anchored on collective progress, harmony, and sustainable development.
