Samurai Blue fight back twice to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw and keep Group F qualification hopes alive.

Lagos: Japan struck late to snatch a dramatic 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining FIFA World Cup Group F clash, with Daichi Kamada’s 89th-minute equaliser denying the Dutch all three points.

Both sides approached the contest with attacking intent, producing an open and entertaining encounter that burst into life after a relatively balanced first half.

The Netherlands enjoyed the lion’s share of possession before the break but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Japanese defence. Japan, meanwhile, remained a constant threat on the counterattack, using its pace and movement to unsettle the Dutch backline.

The breakthrough finally arrived six minutes after the restart when Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from a well-delivered cross to put his side ahead.

Japan responded swiftly. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura capped a flowing attacking move with a clinical finish to level the scores and ignite the contest.

The Dutch regained the advantage in the 64th minute when Crysencio Summerville kept his composure to finish neatly and restore his side’s lead at 2-1.

But Japan refused to fade. The Samurai Blue continued to press forward in search of another equaliser, forcing the Netherlands onto the defensive during the closing stages.

Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion in the 89th minute when Kamada found the net to make it 2-2 and spark celebrations among the Japanese supporters.

Both teams pushed for a winner during a frantic finale, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough before the final whistle.

The result leaves Group F finely poised, with both nations collecting a valuable point in the race for a place in the knockout rounds.

For the Netherlands, it was a frustrating evening after surrendering the lead twice. Japan, however, will take confidence from a spirited performance that once again highlighted its growing stature on the world stage.
