Kano Assembly refutes alleged probe of ALGON chair

Kano: Kano State House of Assembly has dismissed reports alleging that the House is ready to investigate the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yusha’u, describing them as false and misleading.

This disclosure is contained in a statement issued in Kano by Mr. Kamaluddeen Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Assembly.

Shawai said the report, which circulated on various online platforms, falsely claimed that the Assembly had concluded arrangements to probe the ALGON Chair, who also serves as Chairman of Tudun Wada Local Government Council, over alleged irregularities in land allocation.

He stated that the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawal Hussain-Dala, had neither granted an interview nor provided a comment to any media outlet concerning such an investigation.

“The receipt of a petition by the Majority Leader from citizens does not translate to an endorsement of any investigation, nor does it constitute a decision or pronouncement by the House,” Shawai said.

He added, “The assembly condemns with a deliberate misrepresentation of legislative procedures”, adding that the reports were aimed at tarnishing the image of both the Majority Leader and the institution.

Shawai stated that the Assembly operates within the bounds of the constitution and due process, saying,” any investigation must follow. The laid-down procedures include a fair hearing for all parties.

“The House reserves the right to receive and consider petitions from individuals or groups, guided by transparency and the rule of law.”

The Assembly called on individuals and media outlets that circulated the report to retract it and issue a public apology within seven days or face legal action.
