Lagos: The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Metta, has officially commenced subsidised dialysis sessions for kidney patients, following a Federal Government initiative that slashes the cost of treatment by over 75%.
Patients now pay ₦12,000 per session, down from the previous ₦50,000, offering much-needed financial relief to hundreds battling chronic kidney conditions.
According to the agency report, 58 patients who visited the FMC, Ebute=Metta dialysis centre on Tuesday, August 19, paid N12,000 for dialysis, as recorded in the hospital’s August list.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced a reduction of the price of a single dialysis session from an average of ₦50,000 to a new subsidised rate of ₦12,000.
The price of the procedure was slashed by 76 per cent.
Mrs Dorcas Ibeh, a relative who accompanied a patient to the hospital for dialysis, confirmed that they paid N12,000 for the session, adding that the subsidised price would bring financial relief to patients.
“A family friend confirmed the subsidised dialysis session at FMC Ebute Metta. We came last week for a session, and we are here again this week because my brother needs dialysis every week due to his condition.”
Also, a patient who pleaded anonymity described the gesture as commendable, urging the government to do more to reduce the financial burden for kidney patients and their families.
“What the government is doing in the area of dialysis is good, but it should not end there; kidney patients need more support to survive,” she said.
The Acting Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Saheed Ogunme, said the hospital initially started subsidised dialysis sessions for kidney patients in 2024.
According to him, no fewer than 900 patients benefited from the subsidised dialysis session in 2024.
