Asaba, Delta (Nigeria): Hosts Team Delta made a dramatic leap to second place on the medals table at the 9th National Youth Games on Friday, following a trio of gold medal victories in athletics.
Delta achieved the feat after winning three gold medals in athletics to equal Team Edo’s tally of 30 gold medals.
The defending champions overtook Team Edo with a superior number of silver medals, moving them ahead in the standings.
As of late Friday, Team Delta had 30 gold, 32 silver, and 30 bronze medals. Team Edo slipped to third with 30 gold, 12 silver, and 20 bronze.
Surprise contenders Team Kwara moved into fourth place, overtaking Team Abia with 14 gold, eight silver, and 11 bronze medals.
Team Abia dropped to fifth position with 13 gold, 12 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
The Team Lagos maintained top spot with 39 gold, 23 silver, and 17 bronze medals.
The 9th National Youth Games will end on Saturday, with Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, expected at the closing.
