NAAE Confirms Airspace Calibration to Ensure Harmattan Safety

Lagos: Mr Selzing Miri, President of the National Association of Air Traffic Engineers (NAAE), has announced that flight calibration of Nigeria’s airspace is currently underway to guarantee safety during the harmattan season.

He told journalists in Lagos that Nigeria had long relied on foreign experts to check navigation equipment before the hazy season each year.

Miri said the issue had been resolved, noting that Nigeria now has a calibration aircraft and a fully certified local crew to carry out the work.

He said passenger traffic would rise during the Yuletide period, adding that aviation agencies had prepared to maintain safety across the airspace.

“The good news is that Nigeria now has a flight calibration aircraft and a functional crew who are fully trained and certified.

“Before now, we always faced delays because we needed foreigners to check our equipment before the harmattan period.

“But the aircraft is operating now. As I speak, flight calibration is already in progress,” Miri said.

He said Lagos calibration would be conducted on Saturday, adding that all five international airports would also be covered.

“Before the season draws closer, most airports will be checked to confirm the serviceability of the facilities used by airlines,” he said.Flight calibration involves using specialised aircraft to test and verify signals from ground-based navigation aids, ensuring accuracy and compliance with ICAO standards.
