London: FIFA has come under fire after revelations that England supporters could face bills exceeding £5,000 just to follow their team through next summer’s World Cup in the United States.
Football Supporters Europe (FSE) branded the governing body’s pricing strategy a “monumental betrayal,” calling for an immediate halt to ticket sales after it emerged that Participating Member Association (PMA) tickets are up to five times higher than those at the Qatar 2022 tournament.
England’s opening clash against Croatia in Dallas will cost fans at least £198 for a “value tier” seat, rising to £520 for premium access.
Prices escalate as the tournament progresses, with the cheapest PMA ticket for the July 19 final set at £3,117. Scotland fans face similar costs, with tickets for their opener against Haiti in Boston starting at £134.
Supporters’ groups have condemned the pricing as “extortionate,” noting that costs do not include soaring travel and accommodation expenses.
The England Fans’ Embassy described the so-called “Supporter Value Category 3” tickets — priced at over £5,200 for fans following England from start to finish — as “a slap in the face.”
FIFA defended the model, saying it reflects “market practice” in North America and aligns with industry trends.
But critics argue the policy undermines the tradition of the World Cup, with variable pricing based on fixture “attractiveness,” leaving fans of different nations paying vastly different sums for the same stage of competition.
With outrage mounting across Europe, FSE has urged FIFA to consult national associations and supporters before proceeding, warning that loyalty and accessibility — the lifeblood of the tournament — are being priced out of the game.
