Lagos: Shock and sorrow swept through Nollywood on Saturday following the sudden death of acclaimed actress, producer, and filmmaker Allwell Ademola. She was 43.
Ademola, a versatile Yoruba film star celebrated for her commanding screen presence and creative range, reportedly suffered a heart attack at her Lagos residence before being rushed to Ancilla Hospital in Agege, where she was pronounced dead.
Tributes flooded social media as colleagues and fans struggled to process the loss. Veteran actress Faithia Williams wrote: “Haaaa. This hit me so bad. Eniobanke.” Actor Damola Olatunji shared a candlelight image captioned: “Life is a mirage.” Bidemi Kosoko, visibly shaken, posted: “No way. No, no, no. Ko possible ooo. This isn’t true. God forbid.” Mide Martins described the day as a “dark Saturday” for the industry.
Born on August 9, 1983, Ademola hailed from a royal family in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and was the granddaughter of Justice Adetokunbo Ademola, Nigeria’s first Chief Justice. Her career began early, with a child acting role in 1986 on NTA’s Animal Games with Uncle Wole. She officially joined Nollywood in 1992 and went on to star in films such as You or I (2013), Omo Emi (2017), and Aye Keji.
Beyond acting, Ademola was a singer and band leader. She formed Allwell and Company in 2002, released an album in 2006, and inaugurated the band in 2010, showcasing her multifaceted artistry.
Her passing is being described as a painful and untimely loss to Nollywood and Nigeria’s creative industry. Colleagues say her legacy will endure through her films, music, and the inspiration she gave to younger talents.
