Lagos: Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has etched her name deeper into African cinema history, as her blockbuster Behind the Scenes smashed past the ₦2 billion mark at the box office — the first Nollywood film ever to achieve the feat.

FilmOne Entertainment, the movie’s distributor, announced on Monday that the film has grossed ₦2,103,039,706 in ticket sales, officially crowning it the highest‑grossing Nollywood release of all time.

The company hailed the achievement as “record‑breaking and unprecedented,” noting that Behind the Scenes is also the top Nollywood performer in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The milestone cements Akindele’s status as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker. She now holds the distinction of being the highest‑grossing writer, director, and producer in West Africa’s history, while also becoming the first filmmaker to dominate the African box office for three consecutive years.

Reacting to the groundswell of support, FilmOne praised audiences for “believing in the magic of storytelling,” describing the film’s run as more than a commercial triumph — a cultural movement powered by loyalty and word of mouth.

The ₦2 billion landmark builds on the film’s earlier records, having crossed ₦1 billion before surging to ₦1.77 billion. Its relentless climb has now placed it firmly at the summit of Nollywood’s all‑time rankings.

Starring Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, alongside an ensemble cast including Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Ini Dima‑Okojie, Adebowale “Mr Macaroni,” and others, Behind the Scenes tackles the theme of “black tax” — the emotional, social, and financial strain of supporting extended family. The relatable subject matter has struck a chord with audiences, particularly young adults, fueling sustained attendance across Nigeria and West Africa.

Fans and critics alike attribute the film’s success to its compelling storytelling, star‑studded cast, aggressive marketing, and Akindele’s unmatched ability to deliver box‑office juggernauts. With its cinema run still ongoing and international markets adding to its earnings, Behind the Scenes is being hailed as a defining moment in Nollywood’s commercial evolution — proof that the industry can deliver billion‑naira blockbusters with global reach.
