Sagamu–Ibadan Gas Pipeline Reaches 80% Completion

by Eniola Grace

Lagos: The Managing Director of NIPCO Gas Ltd., Mr Nagendra Verma, says the 18-inch, 80-kilometre Sagamu–Ibadan natural gas pipeline is now 80 per cent complete.

Verma disclosed this during an interactive session with energy correspondents in Lagos on Friday.

He stated that the project is scheduled for delivery between June and July. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to completing the strategic infrastructure within the projected timeline.

According to him, the pipeline, which is being developed in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd. (NGML), will deliver increased and more reliable gas supply to industrial and commercial consumers in Ogun and Oyo states, as well as adjoining areas in the Southwest, helping these businesses reduce energy costs and improve operational efficiency.

Verma described the Sagamu–Ibadan pipeline as a major milestone in Nigeria’s gas expansion drive. He noted that it is expected to strengthen industrial productivity and enhance energy security.

“This critical infrastructure will help manufacturers improve their competitiveness by reducing energy costs, providing a more stable alternative to alternative fuels, and stimulating regional economic growth through increased energy reliability and investment attraction,” he said.

He added that the project is important to Southwest industrialisation and national energy security. The company seeks continued cooperation and support from federal and state authorities to ensure smooth execution.

Verma explained that many manufacturers in the region rely on diesel and Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO). Both are more expensive and prone to price swings.

He noted that pipeline gas access would offer manufacturers a stable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly fuel option, enabling them to lower costs, operate more efficiently, and expand their production capacity, thus supporting business growth.

Beyond the Ibadan corridor, Verma said NIPCO Gas and NGML are also developing gas distribution infrastructure from Sagamu to Abeokuta. This aims to deepen gas use across Ogun State.

The Sagamu–Abeokuta project, he said, is aimed at accelerating industrial growth by providing a reliable gas supply to existing manufacturers while attracting fresh investments into the state.

He further noted that the initiative will lead to a more reliable energy supply, help businesses operate more efficiently, and contribute to increased state revenue through higher economic activity.

“The project continues to enjoy strong support from the Ogun State Government,” Verma added. “This shows the shared commitment to energy-driven economic growth and steady industrial expansion.”

The Sagamu–Ibadan pipeline is a strategic backbone infrastructure that will further consolidate Ogun and Oyo states as leading industrial hubs in the Southwest.

As the Sagamu–Ibadan pipeline nears completion, its impact will extend far beyond infrastructure—fueling a new era of industrial growth and economic opportunity for the Southwest. With reliable, affordable natural gas, businesses are poised to thrive, communities will benefit from increased investment, and Nigeria’s vision for energy-driven development will move one step closer to reality.
