NiMet Forecasts 3-Day Nationwide Dust Haze

‎Abuja: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of moderate dust haze affecting northern, North-Central, and southern regions from Wednesday through Friday. Visibility is expected to drop significantly, with risks to air quality, travel, and health.

NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Tuesday in Abuja, predicted moderate dust haze. Horizontal visibility will be between two and five kilometres over the northern region on Wednesday.

The agency expected localised visibility of 1,000 metres or less. This will affect parts of Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa States throughout the forecast period.

NiMet anticipated persistent moderate dust haze primarily over the North-Central region throughout the period, affecting visibility and air quality.

It predicted sunny skies with a few clouds over the southern region. There is a slim chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rainfall in parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

According to NiMet, moderate dust haze is expected over the northern and North-Central regions on Thursday throughout the forecast period.

It forecast sunny skies with scattered clouds over the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Edo states later in the day.

The agency predicted a slight dust haze over the northern region on Friday during the forecast period.

NiMet envisaged that moderate dust haze would persist over the North-Central region on Friday, affecting visibility in that area.

The agency anticipated sunny skies with scattered clouds over the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Lagos, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa States later in the day.

The agency warned that dust particles would remain suspended and advised the public to take necessary precautions.

NiMet advised people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to be cautious under the prevailing weather conditions.

It further advised motorists to drive with caution during rainfall. It urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.
