Lagos Wakes Ancient Shrine Back to Life as Ejiwa-Elegba Festival Roars Open

Lagos: Drums rolled, masquerades danced, and centuries of tradition roared back to life on Friday as the Iru community in Lagos unveiled a restored ancient shrine, opening the Ejiwa-Elegba Festival with a ceremony that blended spiritual reverence with a bold declaration of cultural pride.

The Oniru of Iru, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, officiated the ceremony alongside traditional rulers, government officials, cultural leaders, and community heads.

Dignitaries and residents assembled at the historic site, underscoring a pivotal moment in safeguarding Iru’s cultural and spiritual legacy.

Lawal said, “The reconstruction of the Agbo Elegba symbolises our commitment to preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern development.”

He described the shrine as a sacred structure for protection, guidance, and the community’s spiritual gateway.

According to him, its renewal reflects the Iru people’s reverence for their traditions and their role in promoting unity and prosperity.

The traditional ruler emphasised that the project was realised through collective initiative, demonstrating robust community involvement and resolve for cultural continuity.

He said the festival would feature traditional rites, cultural displays, musical performances, and community engagement over several days.

He urged residents and visitors to “uphold peace, respect and collective pride” throughout the celebrations.

Lawal emphasised how cultural festivals strengthen identity, unity and community tourism.

He also invited investors to explore opportunities through the #LeGIT initiative, which aims to promote cultural heritage and sustainable development in Iru.

The festival attracts indigenes, residents, and tourists, celebrating the Iru people’s cultural identity.e.

The event included dances, masquerade displays, and performances by various groups and age grades.

Security personnel ensured order as organisers reaffirmed their dedication to a tranquil, successful celebration.
