U.S. Forces Intercept Iranian Cargo Ship in Maritime Operation

by Toye Faleye

U.S. forces seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska in the Arabian Sea during a tense maritime encounter that may affect ongoing Middle Eastern negotiations.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the operation on the 19th. The ship tried to escape north toward Iran’s Bandar Abbas port, ignoring several warnings from the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance before being stopped.

After several hours without a response, the Spruance ordered the crew to leave the engine room and then disabled the ship by firing at its propulsion system.

Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, who had recently moved from Japan to the Middle East, boarded the vessel and took it into U.S. custody.

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Our navy stopped it by creating a hole in the engine room, and now the Marines have seized the vessel and are checking what’s inside.” The interception comes at a sensitive time, as a two-week ceasefire is set to expire on the 21st.

The seizure may give the U.S. more leverage, but it could also lead to new tensions if Iran views it as a provocation. CENTCOM said the action was “cautious, professional, and proportional.”

CENTCOM also noted that since the Strait of Hormuz blockade started, 25 merchant ships have been turned back or sent to Iranian ports.

It is still unclear if this incident will lead to more conflict or become part of negotiations, but the capture of the Touska has increased tensions in the region.
