Ibadan Gambit: Fani-Kayode Warns Against Return of ‘Operation Wetie’

by Kehinde Adegoke

Ibadan: Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Germany, Femi Fani-Kayode, has sounded a stark warning to opposition figures who gathered in Ibadan, cautioning that their threat to revive “Operation Wetie” is a dangerous gamble that could plunge the nation back into chaos.

Recalling the violent history of the 1965 crisis in the Southwest, Fani-Kayode stressed that the last “Operation Wetie” left no winners — only devastation.

The turmoil, he noted, triggered two bloody military coups, pogroms in the North, and ultimately the civil war that claimed millions of lives, including children.

He questioned the symbolism of choosing Ibadan — the very city where the unrest began — as the venue for issuing such threats, urging those involved to retrace their steps before it is too late.

“Nothing beats peace,” he declared, adding that no one is intimidated by the rhetoric. He emphasised that in 2027, “only the will of the people shall stand.”
