The Presidency has warned about a rise in politically motivated fake videos that use religion to mislead people.
On Thursday, the Office of Digital Engagement & Strategy said a viral deepfake video showing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu changing religions was fake.
The presidency explained that this video was part of a bigger disinformation campaign and noted that similar videos had appeared earlier in the week.
“This is a planned attempt to use religion against the President and divide Nigerians,” the statement said. It also warned that these tactics may become more common as political activities increase.
The presidency emphasised that Tinubu is a Christian and leads based on peace and peaceful living. It encouraged people to reject messages meant to divide.
Authorities said they will find and prosecute anyone spreading harmful deepfakes under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.
