Trump Calls off Planned Strikes on Iran, Signals Hope for Peace Agreement

In a remarkable shift of events, US President Donald Trump made a surprising announcement, revealing the cancellation of planned strikes on Iran and hinting at the prospect of a peace deal following intensive discussions.

Taking to his Truth Social network, Trump shared the news, expressing, “After engaging in discussions with the highest levels of Iranian leadership and receiving their approval, I have made the decision to call off the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran for tonight.”

While Trump alluded to reaching an agreement on the “final points” with all involved parties, he chose to keep the specifics of the deal under wraps for the time being.

However, he did mention that details regarding the timing and location for the potential signing of the agreement would be forthcoming.

Despite the positive developments, Trump emphasised that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, which commenced in mid-April, would remain in place until the agreement is formally sealed.

Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump exuded optimism about the progress made, stating, “We have just achieved a significant breakthrough in the conflict with Iran.”

When discussing the signing of the deal, Trump hinted at the possibility of a ceremony taking place in Europe, underscoring the importance of finalising the necessary paperwork in the coming days.

While Trump asserted that the agreement would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, he refrained from delving into the specifics of the mechanisms involved.

The shift in Trump’s messaging on Thursday evening marked a departure from his earlier social media post, where he had issued threats of fresh strikes on Iran and hinted at seizing the country’s crucial oil infrastructure.

In his earlier post, Trump had declared that the US military would strike Iran “VERY HARD TONIGHT” and mentioned intentions to target Kharg Island and other vital oil facilities, drawing parallels to the situation in Venezuela.

Kharg Island holds immense significance in Iran’s oil exports, and any disruption to its energy infrastructure could have far-reaching implications for global oil markets already under pressure.

With nearly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports passing through Kharg Island, the potential repercussions of an attack on the island’s facilities underscore the delicate balance in the region.
