Awe: The Nasarawa State Government has donated food items and other relief materials to the Awe Local Government Area windstorm victims in the State.
Mr Benjamin Akwash, Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), supervised the distribution of the items on Saturday in Awe.
Akwash said the distribution of the relief material was in response to the windstorm that wreaked havoc in the Azara Development Area and the Mahanga community in Awe LGA.
“We are here primarily to respond to the windstorm that devastated houses, property, livestock, and other valuables a few weeks ago.
“We swiftly responded by visiting the two affected communities, Mahanga and Azara Development Area, for on-the-spot assessment and took stock of the affected households.
“Today we have come with relief materials to distribute to them to cushion the pain they went through due to the windstorm,” he said.
The NASEMA boss stated that the items included rice, grains, ‘garri’, mattresses, cement, and bundles of roofing sheets, blankets, mosquito nets, and toiletries.
He restated the state government’s commitment to sustain support for victims of disasters in the state.
“The Gov. Sule-led government is alive to its responsibilities. The governor is a compassionate and responsive leader; he is aware of the pain you went through due to the windstorm, hence this effort to bring succour to you,” he said.
Akwash warned against the diversion of the items and urged the beneficiaries to use them judiciously.
Mr Umar Dan’ Akano, Chairman of Awe LGA, represented by the Council Secretary, Mr Yunusa Ismail, thanked the state government for its intervention and pledged continuous support for the administration.
“This support given to our people in this critical time will give them a sense of belonging, and it will go a long way to ameliorate their plight,” he said.
Alh. Usamatu Abdulrahman, the ‘Sarkin Mahanga’, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries in the Mahanga community, thanked Governor Sule and the Agency for their support and assured that the items would be fairly distributed among those affected by the disaster.
Mr Hashimu Jada, Administrator of Azara Development Area, also appreciated the governor for the quick response.
He also appreciated the DG NASEMA for personally supervising the distribution of the relief materials.
Jada, however, made a case for more support for the people of Azara, given the magnitude of the destruction by the windstorm.
