NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Thunderstorms, Rainfall Through Friday

Abuja: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thundery and rainy weather activities from Wednesday to Friday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja on Tuesday anticipated thunderstorms on Wednesday over the northern region, with moderate rains over parts of Kaduna State.

According to it, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Bauchi, Gombe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, Taraba and Borno States later in the day.

“For the central region, there are prospects of light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, southern Niger and Kwara States during the morning hours.

“In the afternoon or evening hours, light rains are anticipated over parts of Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Kwara, Plateau, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory.

“For the southern region, light rains are expected over parts of Enugu, Anambra, Imo and Akwa Ibom States during the morning hours, “it said.

The agency predicted continuous rains over the entire region during the afternoon or evening hours.

According to NiMet, there are prospects of morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kaduna, and Gombe states on Thursday in the northern region.

The agency anticipated thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Kaduna, Borno, Yobe, Kebbi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe and Bauchi States later in the day.

It envisaged prospects of light rains over parts of Benue State in the central region during the morning period.

“In the afternoon or evening hours, intermittent light rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and Plateau States.

For the southern region, there are prospects of intermittent light rains affecting parts of Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Ondo, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States during the morning hours.

“In the afternoon or evening hours, intermittent light rains are expected over the entire region, “it said.

NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms in the northern region with moderate rains over parts of Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Adamawa, Borno and Kaduna States.

According to it, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe and the entire northwestern parts of the country later in the day.

It forecasts a high possibility of flooding occurring over parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Taraba, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, and Kaduna States during the forecast period.

“For the central region, there are prospects of thunderstorms with intermittent rains over the area, both in the morning and afternoon or evening hours. There is a high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Nasarawa, Benue, Niger and Plateau States.

For the southern region, there are prospects of thunderstorms with intermittent rains over the area, both in the morning and afternoon or evening hours. There is a high possibility of flooding occurring in parts of Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, and Cross River States.

Driving under heavy rain should be avoided.  States with a possibility of flash floods should activate their emergency response systems immediately. To prevent leaching of nutrients, farmers should refrain from applying fertiliser and pesticides right before the rains. “

NiMet urged the public to ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures, and that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.

The agency advised the public to disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets and stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.

According to it, Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.The agency urged the residents to stay informed through weather updates from its website www. nimet. gov .ng.
