Fiscal Reform Push

House to Repeal, Re‑Enact 2024, 2025 Appropriation Acts for Transparency

Abuja: In a landmark fiscal reform push, the House of Representatives has resolved to repeal and re‑enact the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts, a move Deputy Spokesperson Rep. Philip Agbese says will enhance transparency and align Nigeria’s budgeting framework with global best practices.

Agbese, speaking at a news conference in Abuja, stressed that the initiative would strengthen accountability at all levels of government while reducing the oversight burden that has long trailed budget execution.

He noted that the reform would pave the way for a single national budget cycle after March 31, 2026 — a shift he described as critical to seamless implementation by the executive arm.

The lawmaker commended the Rep. Abubakar Bichi‑led Appropriations Committee for its prompt handling of the re‑enactment bill transmitted by President Bola Tinubu, enabling consideration and passage before the Christmas recess.

Bichi warned that the simultaneous operation of multiple budgets had led to fiscal confusion, poor capital budget performance in 2025, and dissipation of government finances.

Agbese lauded President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to budget discipline, describing him as a “listening leader” who responded to calls from lawmakers and experts to end the culture of overlapping budgets.

He also passed a vote of confidence in the president’s economic team, particularly the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, for crafting a framework that reflects Nigeria’s realities and diverse economic interests.

The deputy spokesman reaffirmed the House’s commitment to reforms that would strengthen public finance management, improve service delivery, and restore public confidence in the budgeting process.
