Abuja: The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, has tasked the Super Eagles with winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco to compensate Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Nigeria Olympic Committee’s Annual General Meeting in Abuja, Dikko relayed President Bola Tinubu’s directive that the Eagles must channel their disappointment into renewed determination to conquer Africa.
“The message from Mr President is very clear. The Super Eagles must do everything possible to win the AFCON and compensate Nigerians for not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup,” Dikko said.
He cautioned against complacency, stressing that strong group-stage performances must not distract the team from its ultimate objective: lifting the trophy.
Dikko commended the Eagles’ recent displays, describing their last outing as one of their best in years, but insisted that finishing second would not be considered success.
He urged the players to remain disciplined and focused throughout the tournament, assuring that the Federal Government and NSC are fully committed to supporting the team.
On welfare concerns, Dikko dismissed speculation, confirming that the head coach and officials are being paid up to date, allowing the team to concentrate solely on football.
With Nigeria missing out on the global stage in 2026, AFCON 2025 has become a symbolic battleground for national pride. For Dikko, only one outcome will suffice: bringing the trophy home to Nigeria.
