Abuja: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, meaning millions of Nigerians will not be able to verify or update their electoral records until after the 2027 general election. INEC did not provide a reason for this postponement.
Mr Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Haruna said the decision was made at a commission meeting in Abuja, without giving further details on the postponement.
He said, “After our deliberations, the commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 general election.”
He said, “Voter revalidation helps INEC maintain an accurate National Register of Voters.”
He said the exercise would check voter records, correct data, and remove duplicates to ensure register integrity.
He added it would let voters confirm and correct their details as needed.
Haruna reaffirmed that INEC remains committed to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.
