Shekarau’s APC Return Shakes Up Kano Politics

by Kehinde Adegoke

Kano: In a dramatic turn, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor and powerbroker, officially rejoined the APC on Saturday. The high-profile event drew top politicians and party loyalists from across Kano.

Shekarau received the card in his Giginyu constituency.

Shekarau was accompanied by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and other party stalwarts.

After receiving the card, Shekarau thanked supporters and restated his commitment to growing the APC.

He said the event “reflects ongoing political realignments in the state.”

Political analysts say Shekarau’s return is significant for northwestern Kano, as he commands a strong following.

With his move to the APC, Shekarau is expected to ally with former Governor Ganduje. Together, they are expected to challenge former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who previously led the NNPP before joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

It can be recalled that Governor Yusuf originally won his seat as a member of the NNPP, but he has since changed allegiance to the APC, signalling shifting alliances within Kano politics.
