Iran Vows to End Attacks on Neighbours

by Toye Faleye

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Iran will refrain from launching attacks on neighbouring countries, except in cases where Iran is attacked from within their borders.

Tehran’s interim leadership council has endorsed this policy, a move aimed at easing tensions in the region, according to official reports.

President Pezeshkian, speaking to state media after the recent strikes, issued an apology to neighbouring countries for the missile and drone launches, expressing Tehran’s regret over the incidents.

This announcement follows a week of escalating hostilities that culminated in open conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Tensions reached a peak after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in strikes that Tehran attributed to the United States and Israel. Iranian officials described the event as a declaration of war and vowed retaliation.

In response, Iran carried out retaliatory strikes across the region. In the days that followed, several neighbouring states reported missile interceptions and explosions tied to the escalating conflict.

Iranian officials insisted that strikes near neighbouring countries were aimed exclusively at military sites associated with Israeli or US interests, framing them as direct responses to attacks on Iran.

President Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s respect for its neighbours’ sovereignty, emphasizing that military action would only be taken if Iran were attacked from their territory.

Tehran’s statement signals an effort to contain the conflict and prevent further escalation across the Middle East, even as clashes with its main adversaries persist.
