Abuja: The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Shammah Makpa, has announced that Nigeria will participate in two major international tennis tournaments in August 2025.
He disclosed this on Friday at the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja.
Makpa said participation would help prepare the Nigerian teams ahead of the tournaments.
The Billie Jean King Cup will be held in Namibia from August 4, while the Africa Group III Davis Cup is scheduled for Zimbabwe from August 11.
Makpa noted that the NTF’s strategy is to maintain a national programme that adequately prepares players for international competitions.
He stated that Nigeria would compete in Group III of both tournaments, aiming to qualify for the next stage.
He expressed confidence in the players’ ability to perform well, saying the NTF had a structured plan for success.
The upcoming Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Tennis Championship would also serve as part of the preparation.
Makpa said the tournament was expected to feature Nigerian players based abroad.
He noted that although some lack national ranking points, wildcard entries were being considered to allow their participation.
“We have started receiving signals from female players abroad who want to play,” Makpa revealed.
He said their inclusion would enhance the tournament and offer vital experience to local players.
Makpa said the CBN Championship would also help build momentum for Nigerian players representing the country internationally.
He commended the media for consistent support and stressed its importance to the federation’s growth and stability.
Makpa said the NTF is focused on empowering Nigerian youth through tennis development initiatives.
He explained that these programmes provide opportunities for competition, incentives, and scholarships for young players.
Makpa urged journalists to continue highlighting the federation’s efforts to build broader awareness nationwide.
The Namibia Tennis Association will host the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III event.
The round-robin competition will take place at the Central Tennis Club in Windhoek, commencing on August 4.
Zimbabwe is confirmed to host the 2025 Africa Group III Davis Cup tournament in August.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Davis Cup Finals will be hosted in Bologna, Italy.
The Final eight will run from November 18 to 23, with Italy’s quarterfinal match scheduled for November 19.
Defending champions Italy will serve as hosts of the Finals beginning from 2025.
