Badagry (Lagos State): A Lagos State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Badagry on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old man, John Agosu, to two months’ imprisonment for fraudulently collecting N15,000 under the pretence of supplying cassava.

The Chief Magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, sentenced Agosu after he pleaded guilty to the offence of fraud and conversion.

Layeni advised Agosu to refund the money to avoid the sentence, but he claimed he lacked the means to repay the complainant.

The magistrate consequently handed down a two-month prison term for his refusal to pay back the money.

He ordered that the convict serve his sentence at the Badagry Correctional Centre.

Earlier, Agosu was arraigned on a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and breach of the peace.

The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that Agosu committed the offences sometime in May at Jijoho Street, Ansar-ud-Deen, Badagry, Lagos.

Ekpo said the convict fraudulently collected N15,000 from one Modupe Ganji under the pretence of selling cassava to her, which he failed to deliver.

“The convict converted the money to his use without the consent of the owner.

“Agosu also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by creating pandemonium.

“The offences contravened Sections 314, 287 and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” he said.
