Nigeria’s International Air Travel Surges Past 4.3 Million in 2024

FAAN reports 6.5% growth in international passenger traffic, driven by Lagos’ strong performance, despite declines across other airports.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that international passenger movements across the country’s airports reached 4.33 million between January and December 2024.

According to FAAN’s Harmonised Passenger Movement Report, released in Lagos, this represents a 6.48% increase from the 4.07 million passengers recorded in 2023 across five major international airports: Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos recorded the highest traffic, with 3.006 million passengers—1.44 million arrivals and 1.56 million departures. This marks a 13.18% rise from the 2.65 million passengers in 2023, making Lagos the primary driver of growth.

At Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, passenger traffic stood at 1.07 million, slightly down from 1.11 million in 2023. Mallam Aminu Kano Airport experienced a sharper decline, dropping by 15.85% to 211,671 passengers, compared with 251,541 in 2023.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu recorded 35,516 passengers, a 6.66% decrease from 38,051 in 2023, while Port Harcourt International Airport registered 10,827 passengers, a marginal 0.69% decline from 10,902 in 2023.

FAAN also reported a downturn in domestic passenger traffic across 22 airports nationwide. Total domestic movements fell to 12.54 million passengers in 2024, compared to 13.40 million in 2023.

Abuja Airport led with 4.37 million passengers, followed closely by Lagos Airport with 4.13 million. Other airports with notable domestic traffic included Port Harcourt, Kano, Enugu, and Owerri.
