Over 100 Ghanaian Trucks Carrying Vegetables Blocked in Nigeria amid Trade Dispute

by Tunmise Adegoke

Samia, Kebbi State (Nigeria):  More than 100 Ghanaian trucks transporting onions and other vegetables from Niger to Ghana have been detained in Nigeria, raising fears of food shortages and escalating trade tensions between the two West African nations.

The trucks, which have remained in Samia, Kebbi State, for nearly three days, were reportedly blocked in response to a dispute involving Nigerian onion traders in Accra, whose goods were reportedly prevented from being offloaded by certain Ghanaian traders.

Reports indicate that armed individuals in Nigeria subsequently stopped Ghanaian transporters passing through the area.

The detained vehicles are carrying perishable produce, mainly onions, and drivers stated that the goods could spoil if the situation persists.

“We have been here for almost three days. Our goods are at risk of spoiling. We are requesting government intervention,” said Awudu Tiajni, one of the drivers during an interview.

The drivers, who typically source their produce from Galimi in Niger before transporting it through Nigeria, Benin, and Togo to Ghanaian markets, have appealed to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for urgent intervention.

Observers note that prolonged delays could disrupt the vegetable supply chain, potentially raise prices in Ghanaian markets, and strain relations between traders from both countries.

Market analysts note that the incident underscores the sensitivity of cross-border trade in West Africa, where disputes may escalate into blockades that disrupt business operations and food availability.

Regional trade experts are urging stronger coordination mechanisms to prevent such disputes from spiralling, stressing that protecting traders and their goods is vital to economic stability and consumer welfare across the sub‑region.
