Governor Abba Yusuf has paid N32 billion of the N48 billion gratuity backlog inherited in 2023.
Yusuf spoke during the inauguration of the sixth tranche of payments to state retirees on Wednesday. He disclosed the progress made since taking office.
He said the payments included inherited death benefits, which fully covered the dues.
The governor explained that five tranches totalling N27 billion were paid sequentially between June 2023 and early 2024. The sixth tranche, amounting to N5 billion, was disbursed in June 2024. These payments together bring the total disbursed to N32 billion since the administration began.
He stated, “As of May 2023, this administration inherited N48 billion in gratuity backlogs.”
He said, “We have released N27 billion in five tranches and another N5 billion in the sixth tranche to address the backlog.”
He added, “My administration has released N32 billion between June 2023 and June 2024 to clear some backlogs. N16 billion remains pending.”
The governor pledged to clear the backlog in full. This is part of broader efforts to address liabilities and promote responsible governance.
He said these payments reduce retirees’ hardship, restore trust, and support social justice.
He commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) for exercising patience and cooperation.
Malam Abubakar Hussein, speaking on behalf of the pensioners, thanked the governor and urged continued support for his administration.
