EDITORIAL | NIGERIA’S RENEWED RESOLVE: Securing Growth, Restoring Hope

by TheDiggerNews Intelligence Unit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Year address has rekindled optimism as Nigeria enters 2026.

After a turbulent 2025 marked by economic strain and political upheaval, his call for resilience and renewal must be matched by decisive action.

Hope alone will not move the nation forward — only relentless reform and accountability will.

With GDP growth above 4% and inflation easing, the outlook is promising. Yet these gains remain fragile. Tinubu’s pledge to consolidate reforms, expand infrastructure, and empower citizens must translate into jobs, higher living standards, and restored national pride.

Anything less risks squandering the momentum.

Security is the bedrock of progress. Tinubu’s vow to confront terrorism, banditry, and violent crime is welcome, but words must be backed by results.

Recent joint operations with U.S. forces show intent, but lasting peace demands more: decentralised policing, intelligence-driven security, and a modernised armed forces. Without these, economic growth will collapse under the weight of insecurity.

Nigeria cannot fight alone. Partnerships with ECOWAS and the United Nations must deliver training, resources, and intelligence to sustain stability. Failure to deepen these alliances will leave the country exposed.

Socially, the government’s plan to empower 1,000 citizens per ward, expand digital microloans, and support youth entrepreneurship is ambitious. But execution is everything. Nigerians will judge by delivery, not promises. National dialogue must also be pursued with urgency to heal divisions and strengthen unity.

Economically, tax harmonisation is non-negotiable. Multiple levies and fragmented systems choke investment. Tinubu’s reforms must raise the tax-to-GDP ratio, attract private capital, and drive diversification. Infrastructure in transport, healthcare, education, and agriculture must be modernised without delay. Supporting local economies through agriculture, trade, food processing, and mining will shield Nigeria from global shocks.

The year 2026 will test Nigeria’s resolve. Growth and security are inseparable pillars. Complacency is the enemy.

With collective will, patriotism, and unflinching leadership, Nigeria can secure prosperity. Without them, hope will remain hollow.
