Broos Targets Korea in South Africa’s Do-or-Die Clash

by Toye Faleye

Monterrey (Mexico): South Africa coach Hugo Broos says his team is ready to give everything against South Korea in their decisive FIFA World Cup group‑stage clash, vowing to exploit the Asian side’s weaknesses and chase a victory that could rewrite history for African football.

At a press conference inside Monterrey Stadium, Broos spoke with determination:  “South Korea is disciplined and consistent for 90 minutes. We’ve studied them carefully. We know their strengths, but we also know where they are vulnerable. We will fight to neutralise them and take advantage.”

For Broos and his players, the stakes could not be higher. A win would put South Africa in contention to advance to the Round of 32 — something no African team has ever achieved from the group stage.

“It will be tough, but simple: victory is our only option. If we beat South Korea, we make history. That’s the motivation driving us,” he said.

The coach admitted the team struggled in their opening match against Mexico, overwhelmed by the atmosphere, but showed improvement in the draw with the Czech Republic. Now, he believes the squad is ready to rise to the occasion.

Broos also acknowledged the challenges off the pitch — the punishing heat in Monterrey and the exhausting travel schedule across Mexico and the United States.

“The temperature here is difficult. Even for us, coming from Africa, it’s not easy to adapt in just a few days. And the constant travel between cities has been draining. Recovery is hard when you’re always on the move,” he explained.

Despite those hurdles, the coach insists his players are focused on the task ahead. South Africa sits fourth in the group with one point, while South Korea holds second place with three. The

The match will decide who advances, with Brazil and the Czech Republic playing simultaneously.

Broos dismissed speculation about logistics or future opponents, keeping the message clear: “We want to beat South Korea. That’s our priority. After that, we’ll see what comes next.”

The showdown kicks off at 10 a.m. local time on June 25 at Monterrey Stadium, with South Africa chasing not just a win, but a place in football history.
