by Tunmise Adegoke

In the midst of the exhilarating atmosphere surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco’s coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, exudes a sense of unwavering determination as he steers his team towards their upcoming match against Haiti

With the spotlight on securing the top spot in Group C, Ouahbi remains resolute in his commitment to leading his players to victory, setting aside any discussions about potential knockout-stage opponents.

Addressing the media at a pre-match press conference, Ouahbi emphasised the team’s singular objective of emerging triumphant on the field:

“Our sole aim is to win. This entails fielding our strongest lineup possible. Some players are in exceptional form, and we may stick with the same starting eleven. The final decision is yet to be revealed to the players themselves.”

Morocco stands poised at the brink of the final group stage matches with four points, neck and neck with Brazil, but trailing on goal difference.

Following a 1-1 draw against South America and a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland, a win against Haiti could propel the Atlas Lions towards securing the top spot, contingent on Brazil’s performance against Scotland.

While acknowledging the underdog status of Haiti, Ouahbi cautioned against underestimating their opponents’ determination to leave a mark on the World Cup stage, despite slim chances of progression:

“Every World Cup match holds significance. Haiti will be eager to score its first goal and secure its first point. Our focus remains on clinching victory and topping the group. Any distractions could prove costly for us.”

Ouahbi lauded the versatility of playmaker Bilal El Khannouss and the impactful contributions of attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz, highlighting Diaz’s pivotal role with two assists and a growing influence in Morocco’s attacking strategies.

Despite missed opportunities, the coach expressed confidence in the team’s ability to sharpen their finishing skills as the tournament unfolds.

Dispelling rumours surrounding goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s fitness, Ouahbi firmly stated, “He is fit and ready. Journalists should verify their sources and refrain from relying on social media speculations.”

As the buzz surrounding potential Round of 32 opponents reverberates, Coach Ouahbi remains resolute in his refusal to gaze too far into the future:

“While the chatter revolves around the Netherlands, let’s not overlook the formidable challenge posed by teams like Japan.

The upcoming matches will undoubtedly showcase the strength of our competitors. Brazil’s performance has demonstrated our ability to compete at the highest echelons of the game.

My focus remains unwavering, devoid of fixation on any specific adversary.”

Highlighting Morocco’s enhanced physical condition as a promising development, Ouahbi expressed optimism:

“During the match against Scotland, our players exhibited increased stamina and intensity. Our objective is to maintain this elevated level of performance for a minimum of 80 minutes.”

The positive trajectory of the Atlas Lions’ physical preparedness sets a promising tone as they gear up to face Haiti on Wednesday. Simultaneously, Brazil’s clash with Scotland in the decisive Group C finale will determine the final standings, adding an extra layer of anticipation and excitement to the unfolding World Cup drama.
